Warts are growths on the skin caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV). They’re very common, particularly in school-age children, and can easily spread by direct contact either to other parts of the body, or from person to person. Warts are generally painless, unless they grow in sensitive areas of the body, such as the soles of your feet or beneath your nails.
Types of Warts
Common Warts
Common warts typically appear on fingers and toes. They’re grayish in color, round, and protrude outward.
Plantar Warts
Plantar warts grow on the heels or soles of feet, and unlike warts on other parts of the body that grow outward, these grow into the skin. Plantar warts most commonly look like an indent surrounded by hardened skin.
Flat Warts
As their name suggests, flat warts are flat rather than rounded, which can make them harder to detect. They can be yellow, brown, or pink, and typically grow on the face, hands, and thighs.
Filiform Warts
Filiform warts form around the mouth, nose, or chin. These warts are typically small, skin-colored, and often have a cone-like structure.
Periungual Warts
Periungual warts grow underneath fingernails and toenails, often causing discomfort. They’re skin-colored and appear in clusters that can resemble cauliflower.
Wart Removal and Treatment
After examining your skin, one of our Dermatologists will suggest a wart-removal treatment that’s best suited for your unique situation. Techniques may include occlusion (covering the affected area with a bandage or strip of tape), over-the-counter medications, cryotherapy (freezing), electrosurgery, salicylic acids, or prescription medications.
